Furniture design is at its best when it is unpolished and pure. It makes my work recognizable. Each piece is designed for a personal history, a memory or a future wish. It says something about you.

When it comes to your interior, go for less ‘stuff’. It is the best way to save the earth. A single timeless piece with emotional value is irreplaceable and intended for several generations.

Alexander van Straten's designs are produced in limited edition and are certified. Below you’ll find an overview of the collection. Please use the pdf button for more information or the contact button for any question.⬇︎

Nefertiti

This table lamp was designed after experiencing the power of the Nefertiti as on show in the Neues Museum in Berlin. Some say that the original is not old at all but a reproduction from the beginning the 19th century.

Its presence however is so strong that it keeps this presence, even as a table lamp. The proportions are an exact representation of the original in Berlin.

The base is made of solid American walnut and the lampshade is made of pure silk. The cord comes in a cotton woven jacket.

Mask

This table lamp has the appearance of a mystical face.  In Greek the term ‘mask’ means 'persona'. It is the façade one shows to the outside world, often to make a good impression. Putting up the 'right mask at the right time' is the secret of life. Putting this 'Mask' on one's table is to impress and strengthen a room. The base is made of solid American walnut and the lampshade is made of pure silk. The cord comes in a mat rubber jacket.

Boxer

This object proves that what many designers and architects have stated over the years: ‘there is no difference between designing furniture or a building’.  Boxer (1998) is about open and closed spaces and what is in between. This cabinet has hand-painted end faces forming a pattern of gray lines. With Boxer, Alexander van Straten was the first Dutch designer who was published in trendsetting British Wallpaper magazine: "this work is architecturally impressive."

Canvas

This cabinet is the first of a series inspired by folk art: painting on furniture. The tradition to create something unique by painting a simple piece of furniture is known around the world. It tells a story about the owner. That is why Canvas is always made in consultation with the client and their specific needs. Whether it is a dresser or cabinet: Form will literally follow function. The cabinet is made of painted steel and covered with painted leather.

Hamer

The first use of hammers arguably dates back to 2.6 million BC when stones were used to break and shape stone, bone and wood. This table lamp is able to shape a room by creating a composition in space and light. Hamer has an architectural appearance making the design true to the aVs esthetic. The base is made of Belgian bluestone. The lampshade is made of silk. Both materials have beautiful details. The light source is PL and energy efficient.

BeauDon.JPG

BeauDon

This floor lamp is a true work of art. The grain of the American walnut ultimately determines the shape of the pole. That is why each BeauDon is unique. This aim of the design is to create a shape that will invite you to touch, feel and stroke it. The carefully selected wood is waxed and polished. The base is made of the same wood but the finish is darker in color.

Sofa J.M.Frank (1930)

This sofa from Jean Michel Frank is a tribute to visionary design.

Frank's work is attractive because of its stunning simplicity and high quality. The understatement of his designs is why we reproduce this piece and why the originals are collectors' items. Jean Michel Frank, Anne Frank's uncle, created a permanent standard in design. Something we want to pass on. The three seater and two seater sofas and club are available in fabric or leather. Both materials are of superior quality.

J.P.

Set of 3 stacking tables. J.P. stems from Jean Prouve who was a french designer and autodidact. A friend of mine saw these tables and thought they were by him…!

These tables form a ‘ziggurat’ when stacked.

Moore

So many ways that lead to Rome…This lamp appears as a stack of objects and yet does not deny its function. Each part of the object has a quality of its own, The two lampshades do what they are designed for, and do so in a unique position. This results in beautiful light and a monumental appearance. The base of this lamp is made of painted steel wire. The pole consists of solid American walnut. The lampshades are made of silk fabric.

Mosaic

Mosaic is an ancient art of decorating. It also has a function.

Therefore, the use of mosaic is a cornerstone of our design principle. This table contains 3000 hand carved black marble blocks of 10 x 10 millimeters. Aluminum sheets support the marble. The top presents itself as new and ancient at the same time. Scratches do not change that. And if by chance they appear, just simply remove them with sandpaper.

No.19 classic

In 1995 this floor lamp was especially designed for an interior project in Amsterdam and destined to become a classic. There was a need for the old fashioned light a traditional floor lamp can provide. No.19 pays homage to Coco Chanel who only wanted ‘to create classics’. The lamp is made of structured, powder coated steel and has braided leather cord details.

Raw

This cabinet reflects the true art of minimalism. It is not only about 'less is more' but also about the choice of material and its specific properties. The raw aluminum sheets have a natural finish that resembles a fine wood grain. This design is an ultimate example of ‘simple & chic’. There are two sizes, for both versions there is an option to choose for a maple wood interior.

Table & Cloth.jpg

Table & Cloth

Who doesn't remember the table top covered with a soft cloth?

This corten steel table continues that tradition and has no demands regarding its user. Anything goes: indoors or outdoors, formal or with one's feet on the console to sit back and relax. The soft leather however will support any fine porcelain or elbows of the one who listens to an interesting story.

Ridges

This sofa can be considered a monument of its own.

The use of fabric not only has a tactile quality but it also creates visual joy. Moreover, this couch allows one to take a nap while leaving space for others to sit and wait. The framework of Ridges is meant to endure; the fabric is meant to age beautifully.

coffeetable_stellage2.jpg

Stellage

The coffee table seems to be seen as the ‘tea cozy’ of a room.

We think the coffee table has a prominent role in a home but is neglected, just like a tea cozy. Stellage has a beautifully shaped glass tabletop. This gives a view of the elegant interplay of the wooden framework that supports the top. Just think of how a teacup becomes an object on a table like this. The frame is made of solid American walnut and is polished with hard wax.
